Ease of fitting front subframe bushes.
I have a little issue with my drivers wheel catching on the body work whilst going through the motion of the wheel. It only catches at one point and with some investigation and a little thinking i have, rightly or wrongly, deduced that it is worn or missing subframe mounts. I want to rectify this with either poly bushes or a hard mount kit. What id like to know is how hard it is to do? I dont want to buy the gear then find i have to pay garage to fit. Having never played with subframes, chassis, etc im not sure on the fitting. Also, related to this. Which is better for a road car? Poly bushes or hard mount? I understand that more noise can be transmitted to the car with both, but over the RC40, induction roar and whinning gears, a little bump noise aint too much. What to each system ride like and what are the pros and cons of each?

Front subframe mounting
Hello all, how well would this setup work for the front suspension: Solid brackets from frame to body, nylon tower washers competiton bushed lower engine steady, standard bushed top engine steady, new standard front subframe mounts. I know ideally you change the lot to one type but I have these parts and wondered if any improvement could be gained.. Thanks all. Peter.

front subframe
The rear mounts on the front subframe will always look fine on the car. Its only a few bolts so they are simple to take off but you might find they fall to pieces once removed.

The front subframe is immensely strong - my son once kerbed his mini very heavily and it didn't do any damage (to the subframe anyway!) - so you want to make sure that it really is the culprit before swapping it out as it's quite a big job.
MiniSpares used to sell replacements, but I see that they only do the 1997 on version now. Try Google!

Does anyone know if a 1969 cooper would have rubber front subframe mountings or does it just bolt to the body.
Thanks

I think the rubber mountings were introduced about 1976 - so yours should bolt directly ro the body.

Good afternoon,
Yes, your subframe will bolt straight on. The rubber mountings were introduced to refine the noise, which is a bit of a useless idea when you think about it.

Brand new these cost in excess of £150. I am selling this: fully reconditioned for £60ono. Collection only.

Hi guys,
As said in the previous post, subframes are very strong, but being the young driver i managed to snap my subframe in 2 places after hitting a curb, extremly hard, and like you said... changing the subframe is a B**CH of a job. Having said that me and 3 mates only aged 17 not knowing much about cars managed to replace the subframe. Simple case of unplug everything unbolt everything in the way fo the engine... take engine out... take subframe out... reverse the order.

yeah iv seen a frount subfraim crackbed b4 from hitting lampost. it is a bit job to replace them done it a cuple of times b4 on projects. u really need a engine hoist to do it without breaking your back have done it without tho. i think u could do it in a weekend if u dont come across too many complications like things rusted on. i wouldnt nessarily buy a new one as they dont rust much normally a second had one for a post 76 mini will be if ur car is post 92 u will need to weld a gearbox steady bracket to it. well best to. u cud look on ebay or scrap yards. cud just unbold subfraim and connections to engine then fork lift mini off will prob be easyiest. depends how much u valve ur time i gess.

Front subframe to floor mountings.
hello,
have fitted poly mountings st the front subframe to floor part of the car and there is constant squeek now. left it for a month to see if they needed bedding in but its getting on ma nervs now. any suggestions on how to stop it?
im sure the bolts are tight enough. not using the original two bolt bracket type thing as they didnt come through far enough to bolt mounting to floor well.
so might it be that two single bolts will move independant and allow the mounting to swueek off the floor pan?
please reply if you have fitted these before.
cheers,
David

u tryied putting bit of oil or wd40 on it? but i wouldnt of thought they would sqweek if fitted correctly.
Posted: Jan 17, 2007 07:01 PM
If I remember correctly, there should be two bolts holding the mounting to the floor, and another two bolts holding the mounting to the subframe. Are you saying you haven't got all 4 bolts fitted? A recipe for disaster, if you ask me!

uhmble.. I've got the same problem
Tomorrow I'll be checking the subframe mountings..
Posted: Jan 19, 2007 09:27 AM
iv got the 2 bolts to subframe. its the rubbing off the floor that causes the SQUEEK!
its SO annoying. goin to try some wd40 or maybe multipurpose grease tomorrow to see if that helps. sure they are ftiited right. not exactly the hardest job wi a mini.
if it doesnt work ill just buy new original mountings and put the old floor pan double bolt bracket back on.

Subframe Front Tower Bolt
Brought one of these as one had knackered and all the threads didn't look too good.
Anyway £40!! for 1 bolt. Put it in, go to tighten up with a 6' rachet and the thing strips!
If the bolt only cost £4 then I wouldn't be bothered. But £40!!!!! I expect the fucker to be indestructable!
Before anyone says, it went in straight. I'm sure! It went nice and tight, just went to nip it up before putting on the torque wrench and it went.
I'm going to call up mini spares tomorrow and see what they can do. I'm not paying for another one and i need another one as i don't like the front subframe being loose.
